Helpful Tips
Use the local currency (CDF) for all transport payments as USD is rarely accepted by drivers.
Kinshasa's Transco buses run on dedicated lanes between Gare Centrale and key suburbs.
Motorcycle taxis (wewas) are fastest for short trips but negotiate the fare before boarding.
Book domestic flights with CAA or Goma Express at least 2 days ahead as seats fill quickly.
Common Scams to Avoid
At N'djili Airport in Kinshasa, arriving passengers are often surrounded by unofficial porters who grab bags without permission and then demand inflated fees. Insist on using only the official porters wearing airport-issued identification and agree on a price before allowing any assistance.
Taxi drivers at the airport frequently quote fares in US dollars at rates several times higher than the standard Congolese franc equivalent. Walk past the initial taxi queue to the official taxi stand where prices are regulated or pre-arrange transport through your accommodation.
Currency exchange scams occur when individuals inside the terminal offer to change money at seemingly favorable rates but use sleight of hand or counterfeit bills. Use only the official currency exchange counters or ATMs inside the airport, and count your money carefully before leaving the counter.
