Practical Information

Getting Around

This itinerary requires internal flights (Kinshasa-Goma), which are essential due to vast distances and security. In cities, use hotel-arranged private drivers or taxis. For Virunga Park activities, all transport is arranged through the park as part of the permit/tour package. Do not use public transportation or self-drive.

Book Ahead

CRITICAL: International flights, DRC visa, Kinshasa-Goma flight, Virunga National Park gorilla permit ($400), and all accommodations must be booked months in advance. Gorilla permits sell out. Book Mikeno Lodge concurrently with your permit.

Packing Essentials

Sturdy hiking boots, rain jacket, warm fleece/layer (for Virunga's altitude), long trousers, gardening gloves (for trekking), high-DEET insect repellent, malaria prophylaxis, sunscreen, hat, power bank, universal adapter, USD cash in small, clean bills (post-2006 series), copies of passport and permits.

Total Budget

$2000-2800 (excluding international flights)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stay in cheaper guesthouses in Kinshasa and Goma (e.g., Cap Kivu Hotel). Skip the private boat trips and expensive restaurants. The gorilla permit is a fixed, non-negotiable major cost. Consider traveling in a small group to share costs for guides and vehicles. Use the shared minibus transfer from the park instead of private cars where possible.

Luxury Upgrade

Upgrade to suite accommodations at the Pullman in Kinshasa and the exclusive Mikeno Lodge bungalows. Charter private flights between Kinshasa and Goma for flexibility. Hire a private guide and vehicle for the entire week. Book the overnight Nyiragongo volcano hike (additional $300+ permit) for a night at the summit crater's edge.

Family-Friendly

This itinerary is challenging for young children. For families with teens, it can work. Skip the long art studio tour in Kinshasa for the more contained Zoo de Kinshasa. Ensure gorilla trekking is suitable for your children's fitness and attention span. The Senkwekwe Orphanage is a great family-friendly activity. Choose hotels with pools (like Pullman) for downtime.
